Life in Canada as a Nigerian – Truth No One Tells You

The reality of life in Canada as a Nigerian.

Nigerian Life in Canada – Reality Check

My name is Chidi, 29, from Port Harcourt. I’ve been in Toronto for 2 years. Many people think: “Abroad na heaven!” But the truth?

Nobody talk about the hard part. So I go tell you.

💭 Dream: “I go earn CAD $5,000/month and send half home!”
Reality: After rent ($1,100), bills ($300), transport ($120), tax ($600), I fit only send CAD $1,200 (≈ ₦1.1 million).
💔 Dream: “People go love me because I’m hardworking!”
Reality: Some employers no fit pronounce my name. Some neighbors no dey greet me. Racism dey — subtle but real.

PR Process: Not Easy for Nigerians

  • My CRS score: 420 (too low for Express Entry)
  • Applied for Provincial Nominee (Ontario) – waiting since 10 months
  • Legal fees: CAD $3,500+
  • Biometrics & medical: CAD $200

✅ Advice: If you fit, do PGWP route (study first). Easier path to PR.

What I Miss Most

  • Suya on street corner
  • Family noise during Christmas
  • Speaking Pidgin freely
  • Being close to Mama when she sick

Loneliness is Real

Even with Nigerian friends, sometimes I feel alone. Winter dark days (4pm night!) no help.

I now attend church and join African community events — small relief.

Would I Advise Others to Come?

Yes — but with eyes open. Abroad no be automatic success. It’s sacrifice, not escape.

If you plan to come:
✅ Save emergency fund (CAD $5,000 minimum)
✅ Research PR pathways well
✅ Prepare emotionally for loneliness

❤️ Final Word: Money important, but presence priceless. Balance your dreams with family love.
