Mistakes I Made While Studying in Canada – And How to Avoid Them
I came to Canada full of dreams. But within 6 months, I’d made 5 expensive mistakes that almost ruined my PR chances.
Here’s what I did wrong — so you don’t have to learn the hard way.
I enrolled in “Global Tech Academy” because it was cheap. Later found out: NOT PGWP-eligible! Lost $12,000 and 1 year.
Mistake #2: Worked Part-Time in Unskilled Job
I took a job at a gas station ($16/hr). It paid bills but didn’t count toward Express Entry (NOC TEER 5). Wasted 8 months of PGWP.
✅ Fix: Only work in NOC TEER 0–3 roles (use official NOC tool).
Mistake #3: Missed PGWP Deadline
I applied for PGWP 190 days after graduation – 10 days too late! Application rejected.
✅ Fix: Set phone reminder: Apply within 180 days of official completion letter.
Mistake #4: Didn’t Improve IELTS
I kept my 6.5 IELTS score. Result? CRS stuck at 390. After re-taking and scoring 8.0, my CRS jumped to 470.
Mistake #5: Ignored Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
I waited for Express Entry draws for 10 months. Then learned: Ontario invites students directly! Could’ve gotten PR 6 months earlier.
What I’d Do Differently Today
- Only study at public colleges (Seneca, Humber, BCIT).
- Join campus career center Day 1.
- Apply for PNP as soon as PGWP starts.
- Take IELTS coaching in Canada – easier to score high.
My mistakes cost me time and money. Yours don’t have to.
